Academy is the fourth oldest Baptist Church in Jackson County. A man named Jared Cunningham led in the founding of Academy Church. He came to Georgia from Virginia and settled at a location named YAMTRAHOOCHEE (now Hurricane Shoals) on the ETOHO River (now the North Oconee River). He attended Oconee Baptist Church. Brother Cunningham had become accustomed to dealing with the Natives. He later moved westward in the county and settled on the ITHLOBEE River (now Middle Oconee River), near another old Native American encampment.

The current house of worship was built in 1874-1875. A school was taught on the church property by Mrs. Hattie Deadwyler in the old church building before a school house, Academy School, was built.

We believe that the Gospel is for all people and we seek to minister to all as God gives us opportunity.

Our doors are open to anyone who truly desires to worship God in Spirit and Truth.

It would be our delight to minister to you and your family in any way possible and to have you join with us in service to Christ.
